What is animal welfare?

According to Donald Broom, an animal welfare scientist, "The term of welfare refers to the state of an animal in relation to its environment, and this can be measured".

In order to measure it, the European Welfare Quality program has set up 12 criteria based on four main themes: food, housing, health and behaviour.
